LISD Alumni Association to Give First-Ever Distinguished Alumni & Service Awards |
|
The Lindale ISD Alumni Association will award the very first Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Service Awards over homecoming weekend October 7-8. Elton Caldwell is the recipient of the association’s first Distinguished Alumni Award. Caldwell is a 1957 graduate of Lindale High School. During his days as a student of LHS, Caldwell was an All East Texas football player and went on to play for Texas A&M University under the leadership of legendary football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Caldwell returned to Lindale and became principal of his alma mater from 1971-1985. He later went on to become superintendent for Alba-Golden ISD (1985-1989) and Brownsboro ISD where he served in the position for the past 22 years. Caldwell retired in June 2011. He was named Man of the Year twice by the Chandler/Brownsboro Chamber of Commerce. “I think it’s very much an honor to be chosen for this award,” Caldwell said. “I kind of wonder why me, but I think it is very much an honor. I always said that Lindale was a great place to work and I thoroughly enjoyed being the high school principal. It was enjoyable to go to work every day and I enjoyed working with the people in the community.” Bobby Ashcraft is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. Ashcraft, a 1953, graduate of Lindale High School, worked as a teacher in LISD from 1958-1973. He taught advance math and since classes and also coached football, basketball, tennis and track. He worked as principal of Lindale Elementary School from 1973-1986 and was assistant superintendent from 1986-1992. Ashcraft played a major role in the establishment of evening study halls at the Lindale High School in the early 1970’s. The study halls supported students working on school assignments for advance science and math and resulted in stronger student performance in both departments. “I consider it a great honor to receive this award and I feel like there were a lot of people who helped me receive the award,” Mr. Ashcraft said. “I had great teachers and staff working with me when I was an administrator and the students in Lindale were great students. I had the privilege to teach some who have gone on to great success.” “Lindale is blessed to have good students, good parents and community patrons who support education. I feel like any success I had with Lindale schools was due to all of these people who wanted to improve the school district.” The awards for Mr. Caldwell and Mr. Ashcraft will be presented during a pre-game ceremony at homecoming on October 7 at 7:15 p.m. at Eagle Stadium. On Saturday, October 8, they will both ride in Lindale’s Country Fest parade. Also on October 8 at 10:30 a.m. a short awards reception will be held at the E.J. Moss East Campus (411 Eagle Spirit Drive) in the cafeteria. The public is encouraged to attend. The Lindale ISD Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award was established to honor a LHS graduate whose achievements, strength of character and citizenship serve as a model to inspire and challenge current students. The Distinguished Service Award was established for a former faculty member or other individual whose outstanding service greatly contributed to the success of LISD. Award nominations were accepted in June and July of this year. The Distinguished Alumni Award Committee thoroughly reviewed each nomination form submitted.
